Athens Area Chamber of Commerce
This organization works to promote patronage of Athens businesses by locals and area visitors, as well as to encourage cooperation among the many businesses located in Athens County.
Jennifer Simon serves as the Chief
Executive Officer of the Chamber of Commerce, of which the Historical Society and Museum is a member.
Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau
A wonderful source for tourist information for Athens County. The ACCVB Web
site contains links to area attractions, accommodations, and a calendar
of events that are upcoming for Athens County.
Ohio University
The oldest university in the Northwest Territory, this institution of higher learn works to enrich and educate the 20,000 plus students who attend courses in the various areas of study that Ohio University offers. Celebrating its bicentennial in 2004, Ohio University is an active part of the Athens County community. Many of our members, trustees, volunteers,
and staff, have ties to Ohio University.
Hocking College
Hocking College offers many two-year (and now a four- year) degree
programs, from Nursing to Police Science to Natural Resources, and many
more. The School of Natural Resources' Historic and Natural Interpretation
program, headed up by Ken Bowald, works very closely with the Athens
County Historical Society & Museum to help present various interpretive
programs on the history of Athens County.
The Robert E.
and Jean R. Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections
Ohio University's
Archives and Special Collections
houses records
dating from the beginnings of Ohio University to the present, and makes
these records available to the public. Also, documents donated by people
connected to the University, such as Cornelius Ryan (author of "The Longest Day") and former Governor (now Senator) George Voinovich are
incorporated into the collection. The home page lists some of the various
finding aids and types of records kept at the Archives.

related to Athens, Ohio, and the Appalachian region.
Southeast Ohio Links
Ohio Hill Country Heritage Area Covering and extensive area of eastern and southern Ohio, OHCHA works to actively "identify, conserve, and appropriately develop natural, cultural, recreational and economic resources that make Ohio's Appalachian region a distinct entity." OHCHA meets throughout its 31 county area, helping to bring attention to the many wonderful resources throughout Ohio's Appalachian
Country.
Little Cities of Black Diamonds
This historical organization works to preserve and interpret the history of the coal mining areas of Athens, Perry and Hocking Counties. Based out of Shawnee, Ohio, LCBD helps the towns in the Little Cities region to work to save their historical legacy by raising awareness about the region and presenting programs and activities that highlight the rich cultural and natural history of the parts of the three counties they work in. The LCBD Council is currently working to get a scenic by-way run through their three counties that would take tourists through the heart of the Little Cities region.
The Castle Museum
Home to former Ohio Senator Theodore Davis, The Castle is a beautiful representative example of Gothic Revival architecture. Various educational and interpretive programs are presented here throughout the year that highlight the Victorian era of the house. The Castle is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Campus Martius Museum
Site of the first organized settlement in the Northwest Territory, Campus Martius served as the center for life and government for the early settlers to the Ohio Territory. Managed by the Andy Verhoff under the auspices of the Ohio Historical Society, Campus Martius does a wonderful job of presenting, preserving, and interpreting the early history of Ohio.
Sherman House
The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio is the birthplace of General
William Tecumseh Sherman and his brother, U.S. Senator John Sherman, and
home to the remarkable Sherman family. The Sherman House is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
Foundation for Appalachian Ohio
FAO actively encourages economic development in Appalachian Ohio through its granting process and its pursuit of donors who are interested in supporting business and economic ventures in Appalachian Ohio. The Foundation's president and CEO is Leslie Lilly.
Belpre Historical Society
Housed in the Farmer's Castle Museum, the Belpre Historical Society serves to preserve and interpret the history of Belpre, Ohio. With roots dating back to 1908, the historical society works to recognize the rich history of Belpre and the city's role in the history of Ohio.
Chester-Shade Historical Association
Home to Ohio's oldest standing courthouse, this active historical organization, located in Meigs County, presents and preserves the history of eastern Meigs County while also serving as the host of the Ohio State Harmonica Championships.
Multicultural Genealogical Center
The Center is a non-profit organization with the purpose of documenting the contributions of multicultural and multiracial families to the social, cultural, political, religious, educational and economic development of the Ohio River Valley. It is located in Morgan County, Ohio in the city of Chesterhill.
Countdown To Millennium
This site is an archive of over 80 oral history interviews conducted
in 1997-98 by children in Athens, Meigs and Vinton Counties. The project
won an Honorable Mention from the
Oral History
Association.
